Risk analysis of a contaminated area
It is about the evaluation of the risk that is posed by a contaminated site and the assessment of the seriousness of these risks for the environment. The analysis also includes deducing maximum permissible limits of contamination and a basic conceptual design of scenarios of solution for minimising such risks. Based on the results of risk analysis, a decision is made on the necessity of a remedial action and its necessary extent.
Risk analysis usually consists of these parts:
- A survey of the character and extent of contamination of the area
- An evaluation of health risks and ecological risks arising from such contamination
- A proposal of target limits and target parameters of remedial measures and the method of proving their achievement, including a proposal of a concept of post-remediation monitoring
- A proposal of remedial measures or a comparison of alternative procedures to eliminate risks, or a recommendation for preparing a feasibility study
- An estimate of financial costs and time-consuming nature of individual recommended scenarios of remedial measures
