Detailed description of project

The project was carried out for the area of the Opshtina of Lazarevac, which is extreme due to the open cast mining of lignite in conjunction with power generation. The initial instigation for defining the project was the finding that the endemic disease of the kidneys occurs in the area, eventually resulting in their failure with patients requiring dialysis. Furthermore, all environmental components are strongly negatively affected – the landscape, water and air – and more specifically the groundwater which is heavily affected both qualitatively and quantitatively. This fact was confirmed scientifically within the first year of the project – the area is loaded with extremely high levels of arsenic and a shallow aquifer has disappeared due to mining. Areas within the catchment are threatened with drinking-water sources (as well as surface waters) contaminated with arsenic. Information obtained in the first year was applied with the installation of a hydrogeological well, in monitoring of regime changes and in the design of an environmental protection and exclusion zone. The exploitation well was drilled into a deeper aquifer where groundwater is naturally protected from contamination and is not threatened by advancing mining activities. Individual project activities are carried out to meet the requirements of sustainable development.

The final stage, which lasted two years, covered design, construction, delivery and installation of a water treatment plant. The water treatment plant was built with cooperation from Kolubara with construction works split into two activities. Type of services provided

  • Reconnaissance of existing sources of drinking water in the area
  • Acquisition of basic legislative standards, base maps and archive data
  • Preparation of a hydrogeological study
  • Geophysical survey
  • Localization of sources of potential contamination, if any, resulting in a hydroecological map
  • Installation of hydrogeological wells – monitoring and exploitation wells (diameter 850 mm – depth 120 m)
  • Validation of quality of the well (inspection by a television camera)
  • Monitoring of regime changes by instruments with a continuous data record and its remote-control transmission
  • Preparation of a design of the protection zone of the exploitation well
  • Preparation of final reports of the hydrogeological survey
  • Project design, maintenance, delivery and installation of technology (+ electric part) water treatment plant.
